A three-way valve is a control element of a liquid transmission system that performs functions such as cut-off, regulation, and diversion. It can shut off, regulate, divert flow, prevent backflow, stabilize pressure, and distribute or relieve flow. Three-way valves can be classified by their fluid action mode into two types: a mixing valve, and one with two inlets. This shunt valve has one liquid inlet that discharges through two liquid outlets.

Both are very expensive.
Compared with traditional two-way or single-way valves, the three-way valve's obvious difference is the extra flow port during operation. The three-way valve is mainly used to change the flow direction of the medium. Apart from inlet A, outlet B, and diverting port C, the three-way valve does not change the medium's flow direction, which is quite different from the hydraulic four-way valve group. Working process of the three-way valve: the valve opens, the medium enters from A and flows out through B. When the bypass needs medium to flow in, the actuator opens, the valve core reverses, medium A enters, and C exits.
When the medium needs to flow in,

the actuator opens and the valve closes, cutting off the medium. The three-way valve has 3 inlet/outlet ports connected to the piping, equivalent to two single-seat valves combined into one. By action mode it is divided into mixing valve and diverting valve. When the three-way valve operates, one passage is fully closed and the other fully open. When closed, the acting force is similar to that of a single-seat valve. The valve is modified and guided by the valve core itself. When switching between air-open and air-close, the actuator must be replaced.
