A rodless cylinder functions and is used in the same way as a standard cylinder, but the accessories it requires and the related connection methods differ, and so does the corresponding sealing form.
Both sides of a rodless cylinder are hollow; the permanent magnet on the piston rod can drive another magnet on the piston rod (the movable part), which demands a high level of cleanliness. A magnetically coupled rodless cylinder, on the other hand, needs to be cleaned with gasoline.
A rodless cylinder contains a cylinder body without a piston rod; it is mounted in a guide, an external load is connected to a piston, and motion is achieved by suction—similar in this respect to an SMC thin cylinder.
Because the inner and outer magnetic rings tend to disengage under high speed and high load, it is used less often; therefore, the load mass should be determined from its mass and speed characteristic curves. As a result, it is more of a mechanical solution.
The finger cylinder assembly: the moving body outside the cylinder moves synchronously under the action of a magnetic field. Its working principle is as follows: a set of high-strength permanent magnet rings is fixed on the piston; the magnetic lines of force act on the external magnet ring through the thin-walled cylinder, and the magnetic rings have opposite polarities, producing a large attractive force. Inside the cylinder, driven by air pressure, the piston is moved by the magnetic force, and the external magnet ring moves along with it. The piston's thrust must match the magnet ring's attractive force.
